Yeah, the cheapest budget hotel in Hong Kong is a park bench!

I would recommend staying in a hostel. If you do not mind sharing a room with a few other people, it will easily be the cheapest place for one person to stay. I stayed in a hotel in Paris that cost over 80 dollars a night(with 2 people per room) and while I was there I met people that were staying in a hostel for around 20 dollars a night(with 8 people per room). Also, I have met some of the most decent people in the world at hostels. You will not find more friendly or helpful people anywhere. They are experts on travel and can answer any questions you may have.
One thing to keep in mind though, hostels sometimes have unusual rules, like curfews. Check the rules at each hostel before you stay. I’ve seen people locked out for the night because they didn’t realize there was a curfew. But the advantages(price and people) very much outweigh the annoyances.
There are many websites you can find that will give you information and ratings on thousands of hostels around the world and also allow you to book room stays on-line. Prices vary but in general you pay more based on the size of the room. Rooms with 10 beds are going to be much cheaper than rooms with only 2 or 4.
The two websites I use the most are: http://www.hostels.com and http://www.hostelworld.com. I hope this helps. Have fun on your trip, I’ve heard only good things about Hong Kong!

Chunking Mansions has tiny rooms but you have to be careful. There are a number of little hotels (if you like to call them that) there but all sort weird strange whatever people stay there. Its good for shopping there. I found the chinese that stayed there didnt care for westerners much and were quite rude to them. I had to stay there for a couple of nights because I could nto get my money from Barclays as they were closed over the Bank Holiday but as soon as the money came through I got out pronto.

My wife & I had a night in, I think, the Lee Gardens Guest House. Its the closest thing to a backpackers you’ll find in Hong Kong

You should head to Chunking Mansions – the local fire hazard. It’s basically people renting out rooms in teeny tiny apartments – our room was so small we opened the door and jumped on the bed. Hey it’s cheap and only for 2 nights, you may even hook up with other travellers.
